The Australasian Veterinary Examination (AVE) is one pathway for overseas-qualified veterinarians whose qualifications are not recognised for direct registration in Australia or New Zealand. Use the Australasian Veterinary Boards Council (AVBC) as the authoritative source for your eligibility and examination requirements.
1. Eligibility assessment
AVBC reviews your veterinary qualification, professional standing and English language requirements. Eligibility assessment and examination enrolment are separate applications. Check the evidence required for your own circumstances before applying.
2. Preliminary Examination
The Preliminary Examination uses MCQs (multiple-choice questions) across two papers: base knowledge and clinical reasoning. Preparation should cover the breadth of the published veterinary subjects and develop clinical judgement alongside factual recall.
3. Final Clinical Examination
Candidates must pass the Preliminary Examination before undertaking the Final Clinical Examination. Clinical preparation includes practical skills, communication, problem-solving and explaining the reasons behind clinical decisions. AVBC requires a first clinical examination attempt within three years of passing the Preliminary Examination, and completion within five years. Check the current handbook, English language validity and clinical case log requirements when planning this stage.
Registration and current guidance
Passing the AVE allows you to apply for veterinary registration; it does not automatically register you. Check the relevant registration board’s requirements and use AVBC’s current handbook and candidate communications for examination arrangements.
AVEprep provides independent educational information. It is not affiliated with or endorsed by AVBC and cannot determine eligibility, guarantee an examination result or certify clinical case logs.
