AVBC has announced changes to the anaesthesia and surgery sections of the AVE Final Clinical Examination. The model-based OSCE format and new clinical case log requirements first apply to enrolments for the November and December 2026 clinical examination sessions. These changes should not be interpreted as a change to every section of the examination.
What the OSCE format means
An OSCE (Objective Structured Clinical Examination) uses timed stations to assess defined tasks. For the anaesthesia and surgery sections, technical tasks use models and manikins. Case scenarios also assess clinical reasoning and decision-making. Preparation should include practical rehearsal and clear explanations of your clinical choices.
Organise case logs early
The May 2026 AVBC handbook requires complete case logs with your formal expression of interest in a clinical examination session. This is an application-stage requirement, not something to leave until examination day. The logs must include three anaesthetic cases and three surgical cases, completed under approved supervision and recorded on the official forms.
Eligible cases involve cats or dogs. Anaesthetic records cover general anaesthesia for elective surgery; surgical records cover routine procedures involving laparotomy (opening the abdomen). Cases require supervisor sign-off and must meet AVBC’s published criteria. If your proposed supervisor is not currently registered and practising in Australia or New Zealand, obtain the additional approval required by AVBC before arranging cases.
Check the instructions for your session
Confirm deadlines, forms and examination arrangements through AVBC’s current notices and communications to eligible candidates. AVEprep cannot approve supervisors, certify case logs or decide your examination eligibility.
AVEprep offers independent education using original scenarios. It is not affiliated with or endorsed by AVBC, does not use recalled or confidential examination material, and does not guarantee a pass or registration.
